Her story · pronounced EE-vuh-NELL

She was supposed to be intimidating.

Evanelle is a black-and-rust European Doberman, born June 5, 2025. She has the ears, the coat and the silhouette the breed is known for. What she does with them is make a noise like a goose when the petting stops, and hold firm views about who owns the rug. What follows is the longer version.

Chapter one

People meet the ears first.

Black and rust, with cropped ears that stand up as though listening for something specific. She photographs as a serious animal. She is mostly tongue. The three pictures below are all from this summer.

Chapter two

The collar was not her idea.

Pale mint fabric printed with small pink roses, with a pink rhinestone bone tag and a round AKC tag hanging off the ring. One of her people grooms dogs for a living, which goes some way towards explaining why a guard breed goes around in a floral print. She has other things to wear, including the red harness she takes to class, so the mint collar is less of a uniform than it looks. It is simply the one people recognise.

As far as she is concerned, the petting is not supposed to stop.

Chapter three

Nobody has managed to describe the noise.

It is not a bark. The closest anyone has got is a goose, which is where the honking Doberman came from. It turns up when the rug is in dispute, and whenever somebody is trying to work and clearly should not be. It is entirely volume, and she has yet to be talked out of a single point. Her people have taken to captioning her.

Chapter four

Her repertoire is not large.

The rug comes up most often. There is a recurring bit about her interrupting a workday, and one reel captioned “Guard dog. Protection breed. Fearless.” that is filmed largely from behind one of her people. There is also a food puzzle series, currently at Part 1. Her people call the whole genre honks and fits.
